Destiny 2 Will Have Exotic Duplicate Protection

Destiny 2 Will Have Exotic Duplicate Protection

Amid growing criticism and fan backlash over the past two weeks, Bungie sought to create an open line of communication with the Destiny 2 fanbase by releasing a blog post detailing a list of short and long-term goals for the game. Among the list of post-New Year changes is the inclusion of exotic duplicate protection, which will be put in place to reduce the amount of duplicate exotic gear that players receive throughout the game.

The idea is that when Destiny 2 players receive an exotic, it should be new and exciting; getting the sixth set of Lucky Pants is not a thrilling or exotic moment. These changes would go a long way to help players who are trying to collect every exotic in the game, but are held back by a few missing pieces of gear.

This is not the only change that Bungie is making to the exotic economy, however. As part of the December 12 update, Destiny 2’s weekly exotic merchant, Xur, will start selling Fated Engrams and Three of Coins to further increase a player’s chances of completing their exotic collection. Xur will sell one Fated Engram to the player per week, and the engram is guaranteed to contain an exotic the player does not currently have.

Three of Coins is a returning consumable item from Destiny, albeit with a few changes. The item will increase the drop rate for exotic engrams for four hours before the player has to use another Three of Coins. In Destiny, Three of Coins would grant the increased drop rate after the player defeats a high-tier enemy and the buff would disappear after the enemy was defeated. Bungie is doing away with the re-application mechanic entirely to make the process less cumbersome for players trying to find those exotic engrams.

The concern with the inclusion of Fated Engrams alongside the duplicate protection and the return of the Three of Coins consumable is that there could be too much of a good thing. When combining these factors, exotics would be incredibly easy to get, thereby robbing them of the sense of rarity that is ingrained in the name of the item category.

A criticism of exotics is that many of them don’t feel exotic, and making them even easier to get may further diminish the mystique of these once-elusive items. Regardless of how it may impact the exotic economy in Destiny 2, it will certainly alleviate some frustration when players stop getting the game exotics time and time again.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
