While exact NPD numbers aren’t available quite yet, we now know that the Xbox One outsold the PlayStation 4 in December 2017. This is according to Head of Xbox Games Marketing Aaron Greenberg, who claims that not only did the Xbox One outsell the PS4 in December 2017, but the console enjoyed its highest-ever sales for any December ever.
As for why the Xbox One managed to outsell the PS4, Greenberg points to the launch of the Xbox One X. Microsoft’s ultra-powerful and expensive console has proven to be surprisingly popular, and while exact sales figures aren’t available, the company has labeled its launch a success.
Even with the Xbox One selling more consoles in December 2017 than it ever has before, though, it was still outperformed by the Nintendo Switch. According to Greenberg, Nintendo’s handheld/home console hybrid managed to outsell both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to be named the best-selling video game console for December overall.
Was trying to just thank folks for supporting us and the incredible success following the launch of Xbox One X. But yes Xbox outsold PS4 in December for Gen 8 consoles according to NPD data, while Nintendo also had a great month as Switch had most overall units.

The Switch’s success in December isn’t exactly surprising, especially since the console was named the best-selling console of 2017. There’s no denying that the Switch had an incredible year thanks to major first-party exclusives like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, both of which played a major role in the Switch’s success.
However, if Nintendo can’t keep the Switch’s momentum going, then the console may stumble in 2018, and ultimately fail to meet its sales goal of 20 million units. As it stands, much of the Switch’s 2018 is a mystery, with a recent Nintendo Direct Mini presentation only giving fans a vague idea of what’s coming over the next six months or so.
Even so, the Switch’s popularity has shown no signs of slowing down so far, and its sales momentum may see it outsell the PS4 and Xbox One again in January 2018. While the Switch is likely to run away with another monthly sales victory, though, it will be interesting to see if the Xbox One manages to pull higher sales number than the PlayStation 4 yet again this month.
